When is the right time for Proteolytic Enzymes?

Technically speaking, the terms “proteolytic enzyme” and “protease” are interchangeable – they are protein digesting enzymes, and different classes of both can perform similar reactions by utilizing different catalytic mechanisms. More specifically, however, proteolytic enzymes are an industry term typically designating a class of enzyme compounds with a focus on an inflammation-support faculty.

Typically taken on an empty stomach, these highly specialized enzymatic complexes can be very useful in helping to promote a positive response to both acute and chronic inflammation.

Wobenzym is probably the oldest and most respected of these enzyme blends. It is a proteolytic (pancreatic, protein digesting) enzyme useful for inflammation support, immune support, pancreatic support and a host of other functional support applications. One of the most common questions about Wobenzym (and other proteolytics) is the indexing on the labeling regarding the target support functions: “You told me this is for inflammation and the bottle says immune!” is what you’re likely to hear from patients.

Wobenzym N’s label makes specific reference to inflammation support, while the Wobenzym PS refers to immune. The easiest and best answer is that the properties that make these formulas good for your immune system also make it useful in fighting inflammation. Enzymes are responsible for regulating a number of functions in your body, and the enzymes contained in all of the Wobenzym variants are some of the most important and effective.

While they are the same in terms of core-concept, the individual formulas have some unique qualities and balances. For that reason, I like to take both the Wobenzym N and the Wobenzym PS throughout the day. I take the N first thing in the morning; this gives me the full spectrum of proteolytic “drivers.”  In the afternoon I take a dose of the PS; this gives me a heavy hit of the primary drivers. Think of it like breadth versus depth.

Here is a more in-depth look at each:

Wobenzym N

Standard Formula, available in the retail market (GNC/Vitamin Shoppe). This formula’s profile includes 6 different enzymes at a relatively low concentration. Suggested dosage is three tablets taken twice daily on an empty stomach.

Wobenzym® N is the well known enzyme preparation is designed to promote healthy joints and muscles, support healthy circulation, strengthen the immune system, and support healthy aging.†

FUNCTIONS

For over 60 years, Wobenzym® has been a trusted name for enzyme supplementation. Developed by leading scientists and used by millions of people worldwide, Wobenzym® N has proven to be a safe and useful product.

In the human body, hundreds of chemical reactions occur during the course of normal metabolic processes. Many chemical reactions require significant energy in order to take place, and therefore need a catalyst to allow the reaction to proceed. The catalyst acts to lower the energy needed for the reaction to move forward. In the body, enzymes play the role of the catalyst and allow reactions to take place that otherwise would not occur. The enzyme itself is not consumed in this process and can be utilized again and again. Enzymes are relatively unique to each reaction and different enzymes will catalyze different reactions. Structurally, enzymes are complex molecules that are comprised of amino acid chains and can sometimes include co-factors which assist the enzyme in the chemical reaction. Some enzymes are sensitive to changes in pH and temperature and can be destroyed if exposed to less than ideal conditions.

Wobenzym® N is a systemic enzyme formulation that contains enzymes from both plants and animals that haves been clinically studied for supporting numerous processes in the body. Systemic enzyme supplements work directly in the body once they are absorbed in the small intestine, and are not intended to aid in digestion. Consequently, these enzymes can be utilized to assist the body’s various regulatory and communications systems. Wobenzym® N can help to support healthy joints and muscles, support healthy circulation, support the immune system, and also can help support processes that are involved in healthy aging.† Wobenzym® N tablets are enteric coated to ensure that the enzymes are protected and are not broken down in the stomach. This allows the enzymes to reach the small intestine where absorption may occur.

INDICATIONS Wobenzym® N may be a useful dietary supplement for individuals wishing to support healthy joint, immune and circulatory function.

Wobenzym PS

This is the Professional Strength formula, and is only available through licensed healthcare practitioners. While this profile has fewer enzymes (3, versus 6 in the N), this formula focuses on the three primary proteolytic enzymes, and has them in a much higher potency. Suggested dosage is three tablets taken twice daily on an empty stomach.

Wobenzym PS is clinically supported to help maintain healthy joint function and is exclusively available to healthcare professionals. Wobenzym PS is offered in the form of enteric-coated tablets and provides a specific formulation of enzymes to the body to help maintain optimal immune function and wound healing as well as muscle and tendon structure.†

FUNCTIONS

Wobenzym PS in particular has numerous clinical studies that link its use to maintaining optimal joint health.

Wobenzym® PS is a systemic enzyme formulation that contains a unique blend of enzymes from both plants and animals that haves been clinically studied for supporting numerous processes in the body.† Systemic enzyme supplements work directly in the body after they are absorbed in the small intestine, and are not intended to aid in digestion. Consequently, these enzymes can be utilized to assist the body’s various regulatory and communications systems.† After the enzymes are absorbed, protease molecules can bind with molecules found within the blood including α -2- macroglobulin, resulting in the formulation of an α-2-macroglobulin-protease complex. This newly formed complex alters the molecular configuration of the α-2-macroglobulin molecule which results in a change in its affinity to bind certain cytokines. Once a cytokine is bound to the protease, the entire complex is able to be eliminated from the body, allowing normal cytokine balance and immune function to be maintained. Wobenzym® PS can help to support healthy joints and muscles, and support the immune system as well as normal wound healing processes†. Wobenzym® PS tablets are enteric coated to ensure that the enzymes are protected and are not broken down in the stomach. This allows the enzymes to reach the small intestine where absorption can occur.

INDICATIONS Wobenzym® PS may be a useful dietary supplement for individuals wishing to support healthy joint, immune and circulatory function.

FORMULA 3 Enteric Coated Tablets Contain:

SUGGESTED USE Adults take 3 tablets 2 times daily at least 45 minutes before meals or as directed by a healthcare professional.

SIDE EFFECTS Warning: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, suffering from bleeding disorders or liver damage, or if you are taking anticoagulant drugs (such as warfarin), consult a healthcare professional before using this product.

Wobenzym Plus – This is the new formula, and is eventually planned as the replacement for the Wobenzym PS. The profile and dosage are exactly the same – the difference is that the tablets are slightly larger, and thus only needs to be taken two tablets twice daily. For now, the price is also much lower than the PS.
